Recognition for Lanarkshire recovery service team’s innovative approach to the challenges of substance use

A Lanarkshire recovery service team has received recognition for their innovative approach to addressing substance use challenges. The South Lanarkshire Recovery Oriented Justice Service (ROJS) was presented with the Integrated Care Award at Scotland’s Health Awards. The multidisciplinary team was honoured for their exemplary efforts in tackling the profound issues related to substance use by integrating public health, social work, recovery groups, justice services, and families.
ROJS, in collaboration with Hamilton Sheriff Court’s Pan Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Problem Solving Court, has introduced Scotland’s first dual alcohol and drug problem-solving court to address substance use-related offenses. This initiative moves away from punitive measures towards a supportive system, offering structured deferred sentences with intensive interventions lasting six to nine months.
Gillian Booth, Justice Service Manager, expressed her delight at receiving the national award, emphasising the team’s hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit. The ROJS team, comprised of social workers, healthcare professionals, and support workers, provide immediate support to individuals dealing with substance use, addressing not only their addiction but also broader social and personal needs.
The program’s success is evident, with 85% of participants accessing employment and health opportunities, and 90% completing their support period. The team’s long-term goals include reducing drug-related deaths, preventing further criminalisation, and integrating public health strategies into justice services.
Councillor Margaret Walker, Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Social Work Resources Committee, commended the award-winning team for their outstanding work and dedication to serving local communities. Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer of South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, lauded the team’s commitment to improving community health and wellbeing.
The Scottish Health Awards, which recognise healthcare professionals making exceptional impacts in their communities, highlighted several outstanding teams and individuals from Lanarkshire this year. The achievements of these healthcare professionals reflect the dedication and contributions they make to patient care and community welfare on a daily basis.
