Reminder that credit union’s doors are open to all as Rutherglen bank branch closes

As the Rutherglen West branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland gets ready to close its doors for the final time, customers are encouraged to explore joining a credit union in the town. Despite a previous extension, the RBS branch on Main Street is set to cease operations on Tuesday, November 19. Originally slated for closure in September, the decision was delayed for a review due to new legislation aimed at preserving access to cash in communities. However, customers were disappointed when RBS announced a confirmed closure date for this month at the end of October.

Local MSP Clare Haughey, who engaged in discussions with the bank regarding the closure, criticized the decision as a “disgrace.” With the closure just days away and the nearest RBS branches located in Parkhead, Shawlands, or Glasgow city centre, Thistle Credit Union is emphasising its services conveniently situated for residents in Rutherglen. The credit union established a new branch at Rutherglen Exchange last year, with additional branches in Lanarkshire, including Hamilton and Blantyre which may be more accessible to residents living in areas such as Halfway or Westburn.

Thistle Credit Union is also introducing new Christmas loans to assist members in saving for the following year by incorporating a payment to their savings account within the repayment agreement. This initiative aims to help individuals avoid a cycle of borrowing and enhance their financial stability. Robyn Lochrie-Brown, Marketing Officer at Thistle Credit Union, highlighted the low-interest and affordable loans the credit union offers as a beneficial and ethical financial option for those in need of assistance.

Amidst misconceptions surrounding credit unions, Robyn shed light on the appeal and benefits of opting for their services, explaining that everyone can benefit from a credit union’s offerings. With branches accessible for in-person banking, online account management, and phone banking services, Thistle Credit Union aims to cater to a diverse range of preferences and needs. In light of traditional bank branch closures, the commitment of the credit union to maintaining open and accessible branches is deemed crucial by Allister Cassells, with the aim of supporting local residents and fostering community prosperity.

Thistle Credit Union operates in Rutherglen four days a week – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 am to 1 pm. The Blantyre branch operates during the same hours on these days, closing at 3 pm except for Fridays (2 pm), while the Hamilton branch is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm. With a commitment to supporting members and the community, the credit union serves as a reliable alternative to traditional banks, promoting financial stability and inclusivity in the local area.
