Report highlights progress made by North Lanarkshire Council in providing new homes for tenants

North Lanarkshire Council has been commended for its achievements in providing new housing for tenants, as highlighted in a recent report. The council’s efforts over the past year have been described as the second most successful nationally, with 335 new homes built across 11 sites, exceeding the local authority’s target. As of October 2024, a total of 1,526 new homes have been delivered, contributing towards the council’s goal of reaching 5,000 new homes by 2035.
In addition to exceeding targets, North Lanarkshire Council has received award nominations for its housing initiatives. The New Supply Team was honoured with the Best Development Team (Urban) award at the Inside Housing Awards. The council has invested over £55 million in new homes, with an additional 126 homes purchased on the open market, surpassing the set target.
Through various schemes such as open market purchases and the acquisition of empty homes, the council has successfully increased its housing stock by more than 800 units. Working alongside developers, the council secured 82 properties through the Developer Pathfinder initiative in the past year. Despite these accomplishments, challenges remain, including decreasing Scottish Government grants and rising costs due to evolving standards and regeneration strategies.
The council continues to focus on repurposing industrial brownfield sites and aims to expand the housing programme by exploring options such as mid market rent. The report was presented to the council’s housing committee, which approved future targets up to 2035 and acknowledged the need for ongoing review and adaptation to address emerging challenges.
In conclusion, North Lanarkshire Council’s progress in providing new homes for its tenants is commendable, with significant achievements in exceeding targets and investing in the local housing market. The council’s proactive approach and commitment to addressing housing needs in the region demonstrate a strong commitment to improving living conditions and enhancing communities for its residents.
