Seal pup abandoned by mum after fireworks set off at Scots nature reserve

Seal pup abandoned after fireworks disturb Scots nature reserve
A seal pup has been abandoned by its mother after fireworks were set off at a Scottish nature reserve on Bonfire Night, a local nature group has reported. The British Diving Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) charity was called in to help the stranded seal left alone on a rock, far from the sea on November 6. The pup had to be taken into the rescue centre at New Arc just outside Ellon in Aberdeenshire to prevent it from dying due to lack of food and exposure to the cold.
Heartbreaking images show the young grey pup alone in a cage after being brought to the rescue centre, following its abandonment on the grey rocks. The local group Ythan Seal Watch shared updates, revealing that the pup had been born earlier that day in an unusual spot on the estuary near the Ternery on the river bank. Despite efforts to monitor the pup throughout the day, it became clear that it had been abandoned as no adult seal showed signs of bonding with it.
Debris from fireworks was found nearby, leading the charity to believe that the pup’s family might have been scared away by the fireworks, hence leaving the pup stranded. Due to the incoming tide and the pup’s unsuccessful attempts to be fed by other seals in the river, the decision was made to rescue it. The pup was uplifted by BDMLR medics with the help of Forvie National Nature Reserve staff and is now receiving care at New Arc, where it has a chance of survival.
The local group expressed their disappointment at the incident, attributing the pup’s abandonment to the irresponsible setting off of fireworks on a National Nature Reserve. They emphasized the need for increased patrol and stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
In conclusion, the abandonment of the seal pup highlights the detrimental impact that human activities like fireworks can have on wildlife. It serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting nature reserves and the need for stricter regulations to protect vulnerable species. As we enjoy celebrations, it’s crucial to consider the potential consequences on the environment and wildlife around us.
