A shocking incident unfolded in Perth when a son attacked his father during a heated argument over his girlfriend. John Forde, aged 31, carried out the assault on his father at their shared home. The jury found Forde guilty of slashing his father across the face and stabbing him in the shoulder with a decorative letter opener on February 17 last year.

Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC deferred the sentencing for reports, emphasizing the severity of the assault by stating, “You have been found guilty of assaulting your father with a knife to his injury. This is a very serious matter.” It was revealed in court that the father and son would often watch football, enjoy drinks, and open their mail together using the same letter opener.

During the trial, Mr. Forde snr, aged 61, testified that he was intoxicated and could not recall the specific events of the altercation. He initially suggested that he might have accidentally fallen on the sharp object. However, his original police statement recounted a different version of events where he recounted being attacked by his son while both were under the influence of alcohol.

The father reported to the police that the dispute escalated when he made a comment about his son’s girlfriend being too young, leading to his son becoming aggressive and violent. The altercation culminated in John slashing his father’s head and body with the letter opener, leaving a significant cut along his forehead and a stab wound in his shoulder.

Despite being found guilty of the attack, Forde was granted bail pending the completion of pre-sentence background reports. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of alcohol-fuelled conflicts within families.
