Special rededication ceremony is held to mark 100 years of Troon War Memorial


Troon War Memorial, a symbol of remembrance and honour, celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special rededication ceremony. The Cenotaph, located on the Esplanade, was unveiled a century ago, and on Saturday, November 30, a ceremony commemorated this significant milestone.

The event featured speeches by Andrew Girvan (BEM), ex Sgt Royal Artillery and RBL Troon President, Major David Dickson Deputy LL, and Mr Iain Campbell, Provost. The wreath was laid by the Lord Lieutenant, Sheriff Iona McDonald, who also delivered the Tryst and Kohima Epitaph. The Troon Boys Brigade Pipe Band provided moving music, including a rendition of “Flower of Scotland.”

Major David Dickson, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, conducted the rededication of the Memorial. Rev Gillean Richmond and Father Willie Boyd led a Prayer of Dedication. Notable attendees included Central Ayrshire MP Alan Gemmell and Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Baird KCB, who is 100 years old and resides in Ayrshire.

Representatives from various organisations and groups, such as Kilmarnock RBL, Scouts, Guides, and local councillors, paid their respects at the ceremony. The Troon community came together to honour the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
