Stunning images show Ayr ‘amphitheatre’ plan for esplanade

South Ayrshire Council has revealed exciting new plans for a potential transformation of the Ayr bandstand into an ‘amphitheatre-like’ public realm space. The proposed overhaul includes alterations to the current structure, the installation of a new canopy, wing walls, a shelter, seating, and general landscaping. Denham Youd, based in Wellington Square, has presented stunning concept images showcasing what the revamped area could look like if the plans are approved.

The design and access statement accompanying the proposals aims to create an “auditorium” vibe through light landscaping touches to simulate an amphitheatre on level ground. Addressing environmental factors such as the prevailing wind and surrounding roads, the statement emphasises the importance of enhancing the immediate context around the bandstand for improved functionality and security. Plans also include the incorporation of custom artwork into pre-cast wing panels and the integration of CCTV and soft lighting for added safety.

With a rich history of music, performance, and theatre, Ayr esplanade holds cultural significance for the community. The proposed makeover is intended to preserve and enhance this heritage while increasing the bandstand and St. Germain-En-Laye Gardens’ usability for public events. The project, listed as ‘pending consideration’ on the council’s planning portal, is anticipated to undergo decision-making post-Christmas.

These ambitious plans signify a potential revitalisation of a cherished community space, blending history with modern amenities to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
