Suzy Lamplugh murder suspect dies in prison 38 years after shocking unsolved death

The prime suspect in the murder of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, John Cannan, has passed away in prison at the age of 70. Cannan, who was serving time for the abduction and murder of newlywed Shirley Banks, was also linked to the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh in 1986, whose body was never found.

The Prison Service confirmed Cannan’s death at HMP Full Sutton and stated that an investigation will be conducted by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. Cannan had been identified as the main suspect in Suzy’s case in 2002 and police even excavated his mother’s former home in 2018, but no new evidence was uncovered.

Suzy Lamplugh vanished after an appointment with a client known as ‘Mr Kipper’ in Fulham, with her car being found abandoned with suspicious signs. Despite years of investigation and theories surrounding Mr Kipper, the case remained unsolved, and Suzy was declared dead in 1993.

In recent years, there have been new developments and theories surrounding Suzy’s disappearance, including the possibility that the initial diary appointment with ‘Mr Kipper’ might have been fabricated. Former Scotland Yard investigator David Videcette suggested that Suzy may have had another undisclosed appointment that could shed light on her disappearance.

Suzy’s parents, Diana and Paul, who campaigned tirelessly for victims of stalking and harassment, set up the Suzy Lamplugh Trust in her memory. Despite the passing of both her parents, the trust continues to advocate for the safety and protection of individuals.

The death of John Cannan in prison marks the end of a chapter in the unsolved case of Suzy Lamplugh’s disappearance. The circumstances surrounding her vanishing remain a mystery, but investigators and advocates continue to seek justice and closure for Suzy and her loved ones.
