Two Wishaw churches set to close for worship under Church of Scotland plans

Two churches in Wishaw are preparing to close their doors for worship as part of a bold move by the Church of Scotland. The Presbytery of Forth Valley and Clydesdale have decided to merge St Marks Church in Coltness with Wishaw Old and Cambusnethan Old and Morningside churches. This decision will lead to the closure of services at Wishaw Old and Cambusnethan buildings by December 29, with the first service at Wishaw New Kirk in the St Marks building scheduled for January 5.
Wishaw Old Parish Church, with its rich history dating back to 1840, shared the news on its Facebook page, expressing deep sadness at the closure for Sunday worship. Despite the closure for worship, the building will remain open for other activities and organisations such as Saturday Cafe, Boys’ Brigade, and more. The church invited past and present members to join them for worship over the Christmas period and for a final Sunday service on December 29. They also plan to hold a formal closing service in the new year.
Similarly, Cambusnethan Old and Morningside Parish Church, established in 1650, announced on social media that it will also close after the December 29 service. The community is invited to honor the church’s contribution to the local area and world mission over the years. St Marks Church also plans to mark its final service on December 29 with a special occasion for past and present members.
The amalgamation of these churches is part of the reorganisation of churches in the Wishaw area. Despite the closures, the churches are looking forward to a fresh start as part of Wishaw New Kirk Church of Scotland. The community is welcome to join the new charge, with more details to follow in the future.
This decision reflects the changing landscape of religious practices and the need for consolidation to ensure the sustainability of worship spaces. As these churches prepare to close their doors for worship, the memories and impact they have had on the community will undoubtedly live on.
In conclusion, the merging and closure of Wishaw churches under the Church of Scotland’s plans mark a significant transition in the local religious community. While it signals the end of an era for these historic buildings, it also opens up opportunities for a new chapter in worship and community engagement. The churches’ legacies will continue to be cherished, and the community’s support during this transitional period will be crucial for a smooth and positive transition to the new unified church.
