Unpaid carers in Rutherglen constituency urged to check eligibility for new support payment

Unpaid carers in Rutherglen and Cambuslang are being encouraged to check their eligibility for the Carer Support Payment by Social Security Scotland. The latest census data reveals that there are more than 42,000 unpaid carers residing in South Lanarkshire. Clare Haughey MSP is urging those in the Rutherglen constituency who provide unpaid care to determine if they qualify for Scotland’s Carer Support Payment amounting to £81.90 per week, which was recently introduced nationwide.

The Carer Support Payment has replaced Carer’s Allowance in Scotland and extends eligibility to individuals in full-time education, offering backdated payments for certain applicants. This payment is part of a range of support options for carers exclusive to Scotland, including the Young Carer Grant and Carer’s Allowance Supplement. Haughey emphasised the importance of unpaid carers accessing the support they are entitled to, highlighting the principles of dignity, fairness, and respect that underpin Social Security Scotland.

She underlined that unpaid carers play a crucial role in providing care and deserve to receive the support available to them. For more information on the Carer Support Payment, including application criteria and details on backdating, individuals can visit the Scottish Government website. It is essential for unpaid carers in Rutherglen and Cambuslang to explore the financial support opportunities offered by Social Security Scotland.

In conclusion, it is crucial for unpaid carers to be aware of the support available to them and to check their eligibility for financial assistance. The Carer Support Payment introduced by Social Security Scotland aims to provide crucial financial aid to those who dedicate significant time to caring for others. By ensuring that unpaid carers receive the support they deserve, the government can recognise and appreciate the invaluable contributions of these individuals in society.
