Working to make Dumfries streets ahead

Residents and business owners in Dumfries have the opportunity to voice their opinions on proposed new ideas aimed at enhancing road safety and access in the town centre. The initiative, called Better Streets, is focused on areas such as High Street, Shakespeare Street, Irish Street, George Street, Academy Street, Buccleuch Bridge, and routes from the railway station. The engagement period for the Better Streets project runs until December 16, with the first public event being held at The Smithy building. The proposals aim to make the streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and those with mobility aids, as well as improving access for deliveries.

The ten key locations identified for improvement have been based on feedback from the Dynamically Different Dumfries project, led by DPAG, a collaboration of local businesses, community organisations, and social enterprises. The proposals include widening pavements, creating safer crossings, and separating spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. DPAG’s active travel lead, Gilbert West, expressed support for the schemes, highlighting the importance of inclusive streets and better active travel infrastructure.

Dumfries and Galloway Council will consider the feedback received before seeking funding for the project. The proposals also take into account studies on town centre parking arrangements and River Nith flood prevention measures. SWestrans and transport consultants SYSTRA have been involved in designing the concepts for the improvements, which aim to enhance the town centre’s overall streetscape and promote sustainable modes of transportation.

The designs follow national guidance to reduce conflict points between pedestrians and cyclists, enhance accessibility for disabled individuals, and include features such as segregated cycleways, signage, low-level kerbs, and measures to manage vehicle speed. Furthermore, the proposals aim to create a welcoming environment through landscaping, planting, benches, and sensitive paving. Residents who wish to provide feedback on the proposed schemes can do so online or at drop-in events.

Overall, the Better Streets project in Dumfries demonstrates a collaborative effort to prioritise road safety, accessibility, and sustainability in the town centre. By engaging with residents and business owners, the initiative seeks to create an environment that is not only safer but also more inclusive and environmentally friendly. The proposed improvements reflect a forward-thinking approach to urban planning, with a focus on enhancing the overall quality of life for those living and visiting Dumfries.
