8-Year-Old Louisiana Girl Dies After Rare Amoeba Infection Linked To Lake Swimming


An 8-year-old Louisiana girl has died after contracting a rare brain infection believed to have been caused by an amoeba encountered while swimming in a local lake. Lillian Smart, from Ruston, died over the weekend after spending days in intensive care as the infection caused severe swelling and damage to her brain.

The Louisiana Department of Health said the infection was likely contracted at Lake Claiborne, about 30 miles northwest of Ruston. The organism, Naegleria fowleri, is extremely rare but can cause a rapidly progressing infection that is nearly always fatal.

Lillian Smart’s Family Shared The Devastating News

Lillian’s parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, announced her death in a Facebook post Sunday, just days after their daughter turned 8. Their message described the heartbreaking moment they lost their child after doctors were unable to reverse the damage caused by the infection.

“Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus,” her family wrote. They said the injuries to her brain had become too severe for her “little body to recover from,” despite efforts to save her.

Lillian had been hospitalized after developing a fever that progressed to double vision, according to a post from her mother. She was later placed in intensive care as doctors treated the devastating neurological effects of the infection.

Officials Believe She Was Infected While Swimming

The Louisiana Department of Health announced last week that a resident had likely contracted Naegleria fowleri after swimming in Lake Claiborne. The department did not identify the patient, but Lillian’s family and friends later confirmed her identity to several local news organizations.

Lake Claiborne is located in north Louisiana, roughly 30 miles from Lillian’s hometown of Ruston. Health officials said the organism can live naturally in warm freshwater and can enter the body when contaminated water travels through the nose.

The infection cannot be contracted by swallowing contaminated water, according to health officials. It also does not spread from one person to another, meaning the danger is tied specifically to exposure involving contaminated freshwater entering the nose.

What Makes The Amoeba So Dangerous?

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba that naturally occurs in warm freshwater across parts of the United States. Under certain conditions, it can enter through the nose and travel toward the brain, where it can cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a severe and rapidly progressing infection.

The Louisiana Department of Health described the infection as “extremely rare, but nearly always fatal.” Between 1937 and 2025, approximately 180 confirmed infections had been reported in the United States, according to the department.

The numbers show how unusual the infection is. Millions of people swim in lakes, rivers and other freshwater bodies each year, while only a very small number develop this particular illness.

The First Symptoms Can Look Like A Common Illness

One reason the infection can be difficult to recognize is that the earliest symptoms can resemble a number of more common illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says early symptoms can include headache, fever, nausea and vomiting.

As the infection progresses, neurological symptoms can become more severe. Patients may develop a stiff neck, confusion, hallucinations and problems with balance as the disease affects the brain.

Lillian’s illness reportedly began with a fever before progressing to double vision. Her condition then deteriorated quickly, eventually causing severe brain swelling that her family said was too extensive for her body to overcome.

Why Warm Freshwater Can Be A Risk

Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater environments, particularly during periods of high temperatures. Health officials said the amoeba becomes more likely to thrive when water temperatures remain above 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

The organism can occur in lakes, rivers, canals and ponds, but its presence does not mean that every warm freshwater location is contaminated. The Louisiana Department of Health said the amoeba is naturally occurring and there is no routine environmental testing for it in bodies of water.

Most reported infections have historically occurred in southern and central states. Recent cases farther north have raised questions about whether changing water temperatures could influence where the amoeba is able to survive.

Louisiana Has Seen Very Few Confirmed Cases

Lillian’s death comes after Louisiana health officials announced what they described as the state’s first confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013. The department said Louisiana had recorded only three cases between 1937 and 2025.

That makes the infection extraordinarily uncommon in the state, even though warm freshwater swimming is a popular summer activity. Health authorities have continued to stress the rarity of the disease while warning about the severe consequences when an infection does occur.

There is also no indication that the amoeba spreads through ordinary contact with an infected person. The Louisiana Department of Health specifically noted that the infection cannot be transmitted from person to person.

Other Children Have Died After Freshwater Exposure

Lillian’s death follows several other fatal cases involving Naegleria fowleri in recent years. In 2022, a Nebraska child died after becoming infected following freshwater exposure, while a Georgia resident died from the infection the following year.

A 12-year-old boy in South Carolina also died last year after contracting the amoeba, according to the reference reporting. In previous cases, health officials said freshwater swimming was believed to be the source of exposure.

The cases remain extremely rare, but they have continued to attract attention because of how quickly the infection can progress. For families, the combination of ordinary summer swimming and an illness that can become fatal so rapidly makes these incidents particularly frightening.

Ruston Businesses Rallied Around Lillian

Before Lillian died, businesses in Ruston came together to support her family and celebrate her birthday. According to local reporting, several businesses donated part of their proceeds to help the family while she remained hospitalized.

People who knew Lillian described her as a joyful child who was well known in the community. One local business owner told KNOE, “She’s just always a happy child,” adding that she had a smile whenever people saw her.

Her parents later described the efforts made to save their daughter as overwhelming, but said the outcome left them devastated. “Everyone did everything they could to keep her here,” they wrote in their Facebook message announcing her death.

What Families Should Know About The Infection

The rarity of Naegleria fowleri infections is an important part of understanding the risk. Health officials have reported only around 180 confirmed infections across the United States since 1937, despite widespread freshwater recreation.

The main exposure concern is contaminated freshwater entering the nose. Health officials do not consider swallowing the water to be a route of infection, and the illness cannot be passed from an infected person to someone else.

For Lillian’s family, those statistics offer little comfort after losing their daughter shortly after her eighth birthday. Her death has left a Louisiana community mourning a child remembered for her smile, while also drawing renewed attention to one of the rarest and most devastating infections associated with warm freshwater.

Lillian’s story is a reminder of just how quickly an extraordinarily rare medical event can change a family’s life. For her parents, the focus now is no longer on the statistics surrounding the amoeba, but on the daughter they lost.
