Almost £80 million paid out last year to benefits claimants in Ayrshire, says fresh analysis

Fresh analysis reveals nearly £80 million was distributed to benefits claimants in Ayrshire last year, a report by the Daily Record states. The Scottish Government provided residents in Ayrshire with approximately £80 million across 14 benefits in the financial year ending 31st March 2024. Specifically, South Ayrshire received £37.3 million, while East Ayrshire received £49.6 million. These payments are part of a total of £1.9 billion in direct payments made throughout Scotland.

The benefits aim to provide vital support to individuals during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Noteworthy achievements highlighted in the report include the Winter Heating Payment, distributed to 400,000 recipients by February 2024, and the introduction of the Carer Support Payment, replacing the Carer’s Allowance from the Department for Work and Pensions. The Scottish Child Payment assisted over 329,000 children and young people by the end of March 2024.

Among the recipients of these benefits are carers, disabled individuals, families, pensioners, young job seekers, and those in need of assistance with funeral costs. Social Security Scotland facilitated payments worth £463 million to aid low-income families through five family payments, including the Scottish Child Payment. The report also showed that 90% of respondents expressed a positive experience with benefit payments, with 89% affirming they were treated with kindness.

Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Shirley-Anne Somerville, emphasised the government’s commitment to alleviating poverty and supporting individuals across Scotland. Social Security Scotland Chief Executive, David Wallace, highlighted the organisation’s efforts to expand services while maintaining high client satisfaction rates.
