Amazon Support Staff Criticised Online for Claiming ‘Scotland Isn’t in the UK’

An Amazon customer service blunder has caused a stir online after two support staff members told a Prime Video customer that Scotland is not part of the UK. The incident began when the customer, identified as @janthemanwlj, was attempting to resolve an issue with their Amazon Household service, which allows sharing Amazon benefits with up to six members. When asked about their location, the customer responded with “Scotland, UK,” only to be informed by the support representative that Household is not eligible for customers in Scotland.

Despite Amazon’s website stating that Household is available across the United Kingdom, the representative further added that it was not included in “other parts of the UK like Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.” Even a supervisor later reiterated this misinformation, stating that to access the Prime Video benefit, the customer had to be physically located in the UK. The frustrated customer pointed out the error, likening it to saying Texas is not part of the USA.

The conversation was then shared on Reddit, garnering nearly 6000 upvotes and over 800 comments from equally outraged individuals. Some users humorously suggested that perhaps Scotland had secretly become an independent country. Others shared similar experiences of being told they were not part of the UK when ordering online, with one person mentioning the challenges faced in the Highlands.

Reflecting on the incident, the customer expressed gratitude for the responses received but lamented that the issue remained unresolved. They highlighted the lack of basic geographical knowledge among support staff and hinted at escalating the matter further. An Amazon spokesperson clarified that the error was acknowledged and that Amazon Household is, in fact, available in all of the UK, including Scotland.
