A violent incident unfolded in East Kilbride as armed police officers were filmed by a thug during a three-hour stand-off at his residence. Ryan Chalmers, a 32-year-old father of two, had earlier threatened a neighbour with a weapon, leading to the police siege at his home in Lyttleton. Chalmers was sentenced to 10 months in jail after admitting to threatening or abusive behaviour on July 25.

Reports revealed that the confrontation began when Chalmers, shirtless, emerged with a pickaxe shaft at around 6pm, threatening to harm everyone present, while accusing the neighbour of betrayal. The police were informed of the situation and upon arrival, found Chalmers in the act of threatening to harm his neighbour further. Despite the arrival of specialist firearms officers, Chalmers refused to cooperate, even filming the police interaction and live streaming it on social media platform TikTok.

The stand-off continued with Chalmers throwing the pickaxe shaft out of a window and refusing to leave the premises until almost 10pm. His defence lawyer, Laura Kiernan, highlighted that the conflict stemmed from the neighbour filming Chalmers’ partner without consent, which was then shared on social media. Kiernan also mentioned that Chalmers struggles with mental health issues and filmed the police as a means of self-preservation upon seeing firearms officers.

Upon sentencing, Sheriff Louise Gallacher noted Chalmers’ history of violent offences and the fear and distress he caused during the incident. The deployment of police and emergency resources was required to manage the situation effectively.
