Ayrshire MP joins the fight for pension ‘justice’

Ayrshire MP Alan Gemmell supports former Digital Equipment Corporation employees in pension battle. Gemmell is backing around 1500 ex-employees fighting for pension justice following a dispute with Hewlett Packard Enterprise over discretionary pension contributions. These employees worked at the plant in Ayr between 1977 and 2002 before it was wound down. The former employees argue that their pensions from pre-1997 contributions are significantly reduced due to current legislation only indexing contributions from 1997 onwards. They are urging the tech company to honour their contributions to the scheme.
In 1998, Digital Equipment merged with Compaq, which later merged with Hewlett Packard. After Hewlett Packard split in 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise took over the Digital pension scheme. MP Gemmell has raised the issue in Parliament, highlighting the plight of constituents facing reduced pension payments. A UK pensions review launched earlier this year aims to enhance investment, increase saver returns, and address inefficiencies in the pensions system. Affected campaigners hope to draw attention to their situation through this review.
Gemmell pressed Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds to meet and discuss the case of constituents facing pension difficulties. While the Minister acknowledged the need for improvements in pension schemes for future pensioners, she did not commit to addressing the specific concerns raised by Gemmell. Patricia Kennedy from Coylton has been actively advocating for increased pension contributions from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. David Carson in Scotland is leading the call for pension justice.
Kennedy is organising a meeting at Prestwick Community Centre on November 23 for those interested in supporting the campaign or affected by similar pension issues. The event aims to gather individuals to join forces in seeking redress for their pension grievances. So far, 49 people have registered to attend the meeting scheduled from 10am to 12noon.
In this ongoing battle for pension justice, former employees are determined to fight for fair treatment and recognition of their pre-1997 contributions to the scheme. Gemmell’s efforts to push for discussions and resolutions with the government and Hewlett Packard Enterprise demonstrate a commitment to supporting constituents in their pursuit of financial security in retirement.
