Barony Gardening Club members enjoy talk about the alpine plants of New Zealand

Members of the Barony Gardening Club were treated to an engaging talk about the alpine plants of New Zealand by speaker Jim Jermyn. Jim, who recently embarked on a speaking tour of the South Island of New Zealand, shared his encounters with the unique alpine plants found in this region. Despite the cold December evening, a crowd of 30 visitors and members gathered to listen to Jim’s presentation.

During his seven-week adventure in New Zealand, Jim explored the Southern Alps and captured stunning photographs of various alpine plants. He showcased plants like Raoulia eximia, also known as the Vegetable Sheep for its resemblance to a sheep when growing on boulders. Jim highlighted the beauty of alpine plants like the rare buttercups and noted their adaptability to Scottish gardens.

Jim shared insights into the conservation efforts in New Zealand to protect the diverse flora, emphasizing the importance of preserving native plants. He advised the audience on how to create a crevice garden to grow alpine plants successfully, even in different climatic conditions. Members engaged in the discussion, sharing their enthusiasm for New Zealand’s flora and exchanging experiences of visiting or planning trips to the country.

The event concluded with anticipation for the next meeting in January, where botanical artist Sharon Bradley will speak about Drawing on the Garden. The Barony Gardening Club continues to foster a love for gardening and appreciation for unique plant species, offering a platform for members to learn and share their passion for horticulture.

In summary, the Barony Gardening Club’s recent talk about the alpine plants of New Zealand provided an insightful glimpse into the beauty and diversity of flora found in the South Island. Jim Jermyn’s presentation not only educated the audience about unique plant species but also highlighted the importance of conservation and creating suitable environments for alpine plants to thrive.
