Big-hearted businessman who helped Glasgow’s homeless launches new charity for young Scots

Big-hearted Scottish businessman Barry Cushley, who previously supported Glasgow’s homeless community, has launched a new charity aimed at helping young Scots in need. Last year, Cushley generously offered the use of his firm’s building in Glassford Street in the city centre to the charity Homeless Project Scotland. Inspired by this experience, Cushley has now established Quest for Success SCIO, a charity that will provide community apprenticeships, scholarships, training, education, and career opportunities for young people across Scotland.
Homeless Project Scotland continues to operate from Cushley’s building in Glasgow’s Merchant City, offering essential services such as a 24-hour overnight emergency shelter and soup kitchen for the homeless population. The success of this collaboration motivated Cushley to create Quest for Success, which aims to give disadvantaged young individuals a second chance at building a better future. Approved by the charity licensing body OSCR, the new organisation is dedicated to providing support and opportunities to young people facing various challenges.
Expressing his motivation for starting Quest for Success, Cushley highlighted the impactful work of Colin McInnes and his team at Homeless Project Scotland. He emphasised the need to offer opportunities to young people who may lack access to education, training, or stable career paths. Quest for Success will leverage Cushley’s extensive network to establish apprenticeship positions with trusted partners, offering young individuals the chance to gain valuable skills, receive training, and embark on rewarding career pathways.
One success story from the pilot apprenticeship programme funded by Cushley is that of Rhys McLaughlin, a 21-year-old apprentice who joined his team in April. Through this opportunity, Rhys has gained confidence, stability, and a clear vision for his future, including aspirations to establish his own business. Speaking about his experience, Rhys expressed gratitude for the support and guidance provided by Cushley and highlighted the positive impact of the apprenticeship programme on his life.
Cushley commended Rhys for his dedication and highlighted the potential for other young individuals to benefit from similar opportunities through Quest for Success. The charity aims to empower young Scots by equipping them with the necessary skills, support, and resources to pursue successful careers and lead fulfilling lives. With a focus on providing a brighter future for disadvantaged youth, Quest for Success exemplifies Cushley’s commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of young people across Scotland.
In summary, Barry Cushley’s initiative to establish Quest for Success SCIO showcases his dedication to supporting young Scots in need by offering them valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through this new charity, Cushley aims to provide a pathway to success for disadvantaged youth, enabling them to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential. Quest for Success exemplifies the power of community collaboration and individual philanthropy in creating positive change and inspiring hope for a better future.
