Blair Drummond Safari Park could see new lion enclosure built giving ‘greater access to the lions’

Blair Drummond Safari Park is set to embark on a new adventure with plans for a modern lion enclosure. Stirling Council planners have given conditional approval for the safari park’s proposal to replace and demolish the existing lion enclosure. The upcoming enclosure is designed to be larger and will feature a covered viewing area at ground level, providing visitors with enhanced access to the majestic lions residing there.
The safari park is currently home to a pride of seven lions, all of whom are interrelated. Among them are two adult females, Karis and Libby, who are sisters. They have offspring sired by the late alpha male Zulu, who passed away in March 2021. Karis has three cubs – one male named Murray and two females named Isla and Thistle, all born in 2016. Libby gave birth to two female cubs, Hope and Faith, in 2019.
The new lion enclosure will be situated northwest of the existing reserve, covering an area of 31.95 metres by 10.1 metres. The decision to proceed with the new enclosure comes after an incident in December 2020, where an escaped Barbary macaque entered the lion enclosure and was tragically killed by the lions in front of shocked onlookers. One macaque was safely returned to its home, while the other unfortunate macaque met a sad fate.
Council planners cited the historical significance of the site, which was landscaped in the late 18th century by Lord Kames, as a factor in approving the new enclosure. The proposed development aligns with current standards and aims to enhance the tourist experience at the Safari Park. The larger footprint of the new enclosure, along with the covered viewing area, will not only provide closer viewing for visitors but also ensure the well-being of the lions by allowing them ample space to roam.
While the new enclosure will necessitate the removal of some trees, measures will be taken to protect and relocate others, preserving the natural environment as much as possible. The development is expected to contribute positively to the local economy by attracting more visitors to the park. With these plans in motion, Blair Drummond Safari Park is gearing up to offer an even more enriching and engaging experience for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike.
In summary, Blair Drummond Safari Park is planning to construct a new lion enclosure that will offer visitors greater access to the resident lions. The proposed enclosure, with a covered viewing area at ground level, aims to enhance the overall experience for guests while ensuring the well-being of the lions. This development aligns with the park’s commitment to conservation and providing a memorable wildlife experience for all visitors.
