Blantyre schoolgirl battling cancer shares experiences in inspirational poem

A young schoolgirl from Blantyre who is battling cancer has shared her inspiring experiences through a heartfelt poem written in collaboration with renowned children’s poet and author, Joseph Coelho. Fearne Stewart, a five-year-old who is currently in remission from leukaemia, was selected as one of just five children from across the UK to participate in the Cancer Research UK project. The project aimed to create a poignant poem titled “Courage Looks Like Me,” highlighting the bravery and resilience of children facing cancer.
Fearne Stewart’s journey with cancer began when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in April 2023. Despite undergoing intensive treatment, Fearne has shown incredible strength and courage throughout her battle. Her contribution to the poem included describing courage as “the swoosh of a superhero” and “bouncy,” offering a unique perspective on her experiences with cancer treatment.
Joseph Coelho, the former Children’s Laureate leading the project, expressed his admiration for the children’s contributions, noting the poetic and emotive language they used to describe their thoughts and feelings. He highlighted the maturity and depth of experience reflected in their words, acknowledging the challenges they have overcome with grace and resilience.
The Star Awards, organised by Cancer Research UK, aim to recognise and celebrate the bravery of children like Fearne who are fighting cancer. By sharing their stories and creating impactful poems like “Courage Looks Like Me,” the initiative sheds light on the strength and courage displayed by young cancer patients. Coelho emphasised the importance of raising awareness through such projects to honour and support these remarkable children.
Fearne Stewart’s journey with cancer has been marked by moments of uncertainty and challenges, but her resilience and positive attitude have been a source of inspiration for many. She is currently part of an international clinical trial funded by Cancer Research UK and continues to undergo treatment with the support of her family and medical team. Despite the obstacles she has faced, Fearne remains hopeful and determined, embodying the true spirit of courage.
As Fearne’s story continues to inspire others, Cancer Research UK encourages families and friends to nominate deserving youngsters for the Star Awards, honoring their strength and bravery in the face of adversity. Through heartfelt initiatives like the poem collaboration with Joseph Coelho, these children’s stories of courage serve as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to overcome challenges and spread hope in challenging times.
