Brave Glasgow woman, 19, paralysed from rare condition takes to streets to pursue singing dream

A courageous young woman from Glasgow is defying the odds and pursuing her dream of becoming a singing sensation despite being paralysed by a rare neurological condition. Annastaisyar Muir, 19, found herself unable to move from the waist down two years ago, leading to a frantic rush to the hospital where doctors grappled to understand her mysterious condition. Spending two months at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Annastaisyar found solace in music as she navigated the uncertainties of her diagnosis.
After finally learning that she had a Functional Neurological Disorder affecting her brain’s communication abilities and causing sudden paralysis, Annastaisyar began her road to recovery with a steadfast determination to return to her passion for singing. Months later, she made her courageous debut performance on Buchanan Street in Glasgow, captivating audiences from her wheelchair with her soulful voice. Since then, she has become a regular sight in the city centre, enchanting shoppers and bystanders with her energetic sets every Saturday.
Speaking to Glasgow Live, Annastaisyar shared, “Music was what kept me going in hospital. I love listening to music and singing, and I decided once I got better I would take up busking. I just love performing, and busking means you encounter all types, from old couples doing their shopping to young people going on nights out.” Despite the challenges that come with managing her health condition, Annastaisyar remains committed to her musical aspirations, studying music and sound production in college and even releasing her first single earlier this year.
Reflecting on her busking experiences, Annastaisyar expressed, “It takes a lot out of you, singing for eight hours but I love it and make sure to listen to my body and take rests or seats when I need to.” Her resilience and passion shine through as she continues to pursue her dream of making music her career, proving that determination can conquer any obstacle.
