Brave Scots schoolgirl who survived leukaemia inspires incredible poem about courage

Fearne Stewart, a schoolgirl from Blantyre who bravely fought and survived leukaemia, has become an inspiration for a touching poem about courage. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in April 2023 at the age of four, Fearne endured symptoms like bruises, leg pain, and exhaustion. Despite the challenges of her chemotherapy treatment, including losing her hair, Fearne showed remarkable strength and resilience. Her father, Gary, shared how Fearne’s positivity and bravery inspired their family throughout her treatment.
Now in remission and attending primary school, Fearne is set to complete her chemotherapy in 2025. Alongside four other children, Fearne was selected to contribute to a poem by poet Joseph Coelho, titled “Courage Looks Like Me”, in honour of Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Awards. Each child shared their unique perspective on courage, with Fearne describing it as “the SWOOSH of a superhero making every villain flee” and “bouncy”.
Fearne, who received a star award earlier this year, expressed her pride in helping to create the poem and how bravery, to her, feels both nervous and resilient. Saif Mubarak, another child involved in the project, found the experience empowering as he reflected on his journey battling cancer. Poet Joseph Coelho commended the children for their poetic and moving contributions, noting their maturity and depth of experience from facing cancer.
Fearne’s participation in the AllTogether-1 clinical trial showcases her ongoing commitment to cancer research and treatment. The trial, funded by Cancer Research UK, aims to improve the effectiveness of treating acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Cancer Research UK is encouraging more nominations for their star awards, emphasising the importance of recognising the courage of children and young people who have faced cancer.
Fearne’s story serves as a testament to the resilience and bravery of young cancer survivors, shining a light on their inspiring journeys and unwavering spirits in the face of adversity. Through poetry and art, these children share their perspectives on courage, providing profound insights into their experiences and inner strength. Their voices echo the importance of hope, determination, and the power of community support in overcoming the challenges of cancer.
