Professional basketball franchise Caledonia Gladiators is in high spirits as they celebrate the graduation of one of their star players, Prince Onwas. Prince recently obtained a Masters degree from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) after successfully juggling his studies with his professional basketball career for the past two years.
Hailing from Texas, Prince, 31, has been a pivotal player for the East Kilbride franchise since joining in 2022. Through a unique programme offered by Caledonia Gladiators, Prince was afforded the opportunity to attend UWS while actively playing in the Super League Basketball championships in the UK and competing in the FIBA Europe Cup against European teams.
During his time in Scotland, Prince not only excelled in his studies and on the basketball court but also found personal happiness as he welcomed his daughter Amira with his partner Zoe. The graduation ceremony at the historic Paisley Abbey was a momentous occasion for Prince, marking the culmination of his hard work and dedication.
In his statement, Prince expressed his gratitude for the support from both the club and the university, highlighting the significance of being able to pursue higher education alongside a professional sports career. With aspirations to transition into the business side of basketball in the future, Prince’s academic achievement sets a solid foundation for his post-playing career.
CEO of Caledonia Gladiators, Tony McDaid, commended Prince for his remarkable accomplishment, emphasising the franchise’s commitment to providing not just athletic opportunities but also pathways for personal and professional growth for its players.
The University of West of Scotland’s principal and vice-Chancellor, Professor James Miller, praised Prince for his dedication and positive influence on the university community, reinforcing the importance of partnerships that support athletes in their academic pursuits.
Prince Onwas’ graduation serves as a testament to the possibilities that arise when sports and education intersect, highlighting the importance of holistic development for athletes beyond their time on the court.
