Cammy Day resigns as Edinburgh City Council leader following sex text scandal
Cammy Day has resigned as leader of the City of Edinburgh Council after bombarding Ukrainian refugees on social media with messages asking about their sexual preferences and attempting to meet for dates. The senior councillor, who was suspended by Scottish Labour when the allegations emerged, is now facing a police investigation for inappropriate behaviour. Day, aged 50, is accused by two refugees who came to Scotland to escape the war in their homeland. One of the refugees shared how they received numerous messages from Day upon their arrival in Edinburgh. The messages included sexually explicit questions, love heart and kissing emojis, and persistent requests to “meet up for wine,” most of which went unanswered by the refugee. Day also contacted them on a dating app where the messages were even more sexually explicit.
The refugee stated, “From the very beginning when I arrived in Scotland, I was open to finding new friends as I was alone in the country. After the trauma of the war, I felt lonely and like a stranger in a new country. When Cammy Day first contacted me on several social media platforms, I was surprised that someone of such a high position showed interest in me. He found and followed me on social media, started liking my posts intensely, sending kisses, especially on photos of me at the gym and pool. One day, he found me on a dating website and messaged me, which was very strange as he was already following me on social media and knew who I was.”
Day, who led a minority Labour administration in Edinburgh, decided to step down from his role as leader of the local authority following the scandal. The allegations have sparked public outrage and calls for accountability. The incident has raised concerns about the misuse of power and inappropriate conduct by public officials towards vulnerable individuals.
The resignation of Cammy Day as Edinburgh City Council leader sheds light on the importance of upholding ethical standards and respecting boundaries in all interactions, especially when dealing with vulnerable individuals seeking refuge. This case highlights the need for transparency and accountability within positions of authority to maintain public trust and confidence in the political leadership of local councils. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of inappropriate behaviour and the impact it can have on individuals and communities.
In conclusion, Day’s resignation marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the scandal, and it underscores the importance of maintaining integrity and professionalism in public office. The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of abusing power and engaging in inappropriate behaviour, particularly towards vulnerable populations. It is essential for public officials to uphold ethical standards and conduct themselves responsibly to uphold the trust and respect of the communities they serve.
