Captain Sir Tom Moore’s daughter and her husband pocketed £1m in WWII hero’s name

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family has come under scrutiny as a watchdog revealed that his daughter and her husband received £1 million in his name. A report from the Charity Commission found that Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, and her husband, Colin, benefited significantly from a charity set up to honour the World War II hero. The Captain Tom Foundation, founded by the couple, faced allegations of governance and integrity failures, leading to investigations by regulatory bodies.
Before his passing at age 100 in February 2021, Captain Tom captured the hearts of the nation by raising £39 million during the Covid-19 pandemic. His fundraising efforts, including walking 100 laps of his garden, earned him numerous accolades and a knighthood from the Queen. However, posthumous revelations have raised concerns about the handling of funds in his legacy.
The Commission’s report highlighted that the Ingram-Moores had engaged in misconduct and mismanagement, with instances of blurring boundaries between personal and charitable interests. The couple reportedly received financial benefits through book deals, with funds not reaching the charity as intended. Additionally, discrepancies were noted in their handling of intellectual property rights and the use of the foundation’s name for personal gain.
Despite the challenges faced by the foundation, the Charity Commission has not called for its closure. The Ingram-Moores expressed feeling unfairly treated by the investigation, emphasising the toll it has taken on their family. Calls have been made for the couple to rectify the situation by returning funds owed to the foundation for charitable purposes.
In response, the Captain Tom Foundation urged the Ingram-Moores to honour the commitments made by Captain Tom and ensure that funds are directed to deserving causes, aligning with his legacy of selflessness. As the saga continues to unfold, questions linger about transparency, accountability, and the ethical responsibilities of charities in upholding donors’ intentions.
