Children in Motherwell celebrate opening of steelworks-themed play area

Children and families in Motherwell recently gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a new steelworks-themed play area located on Roman Road. The play area, designed to honour Motherwell’s steelworks history, was inaugurated by Cathedral Primary School student, Cerys Lambert, whose winning design from the “Design-a-Sign” competition is now proudly displayed at the park’s entrance.
The project was a collaborative effort between the North Lanarkshire Council’s Community Partnership Team, local resident Joe Wemyss, pupils from Cathedral Primary and Muir Street Primary, and the Lanarkshire Deaf Club. It aims to blend heritage with fun and activity, incorporating steel industry-inspired elements into both the play equipment and ground surfaces.
Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the council’s Communities Committee, commended the new facility for providing a safe and enjoyable environment for young people while also celebrating the town’s industrial past. The playground features various attractions such as a Steelworks multi-play unit, accessible roundabout and trampoline, sign language boards, swings including a basket swing and rollrunner, and picnic benches for families.
Funded by £140,000 from the Local Development Programme and the Scottish Government, the project highlights the strong community spirit present in Motherwell. The play area’s design not only fosters creativity and inclusivity but also offers a space where families can gather, play, and create lasting memories.
In an era of modernisation, preserving a community’s heritage through innovative initiatives like the steelworks-themed play area in Motherwell is crucial. Embracing the past while looking towards a vibrant future can help instil a sense of pride and belonging among residents, young and old alike. The dedication and collaboration that went into creating this play area serve as a testament to the passionate community spirit that thrives in Motherwell.
