Christmas-daft Scots mum hopes to save dementia charity by lighting up her home

A dedicated Scottish mum with a love for all things Christmas is on a mission to support a local dementia charity by lighting up her home with festive decorations. Ruth Moore of East Kilbride is continuing her tradition of illuminating her house in aid of the East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers Group, which is facing financial challenges. Ruth has been decorating her home in Bosfield Place, East Mains, as a birthday celebration each year, following the footsteps of her late father, William Miller, who started the tradition of creating a winter wonderland at their family home. To support the charity, Ruth and her family and friends work tirelessly to ensure the house is filled with festive lights and decorations, bringing joy to the community.
The festive lights at Ruth’s home will be on display from December 3 to 30, inviting locals to come along and contribute to the cause. Ruth, a former care worker, emphasises the importance of supporting local charities like the EK Dementia Carers, especially during these challenging times. Last year, Ruth raised £2500 for the charity and aims to surpass that amount this year to provide essential assistance to the struggling service. With a goal of raising £3000 or more, Ruth highlights the valuable role the Pine Crescent facility plays in the community by offering care and support to those affected by dementia.
The EK Dementia Carers Group, which has been a pillar of support in East Kilbride for over 30 years, relies heavily on fundraising and donations to continue their vital services. As the charity faces a significant funding gap of around £46,000 to reach their yearly target of £75,000, the community’s support is more crucial than ever. Group co-ordinator Brian Doig emphasises the dedication of volunteers and the necessity of financial backing to sustain the care and support provided to individuals with dementia and their families. Despite the challenges, Ruth’s unwavering commitment to fundraising and raising awareness serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the power of community support in times of need.
Ruth expresses her gratitude to local businesses for their donations and support, underlining the collaborative effort required to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Through her charitable endeavours, Ruth not only honours her father’s memory but also spreads festive cheer and goodwill in her community. To contribute to the cause and support the EK Dementia Carers Group, donations can be made online. Ruth’s selfless actions exemplify the spirit of giving and compassion, reminding us of the impact one individual can have in creating positive change within their community.
