Clare Adamson MSP visits Wishaw YMCA to discuss future of its Esports Academy

Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, recently paid a visit to the YMCA in Wishaw to make a Christmas donation and discuss the future of its Esports Academy. The Esports Academy provides a space for young people to come together and bond over their love for gaming in a safe environment. Participants in the academy receive guidance to help them build confidence, acquire new skills, and most importantly, have fun.
Esports not only allow youths to enjoy gaming but also help them develop meta-skills such as resilience, self-confidence, problem-solving, and creative thinking while socializing with their peers. The academy offers a range of classes, made possible through National Lottery Community Funding which ensures these classes are free for the participants. However, there is a need for additional funding to expand the facilities and provide more equipment, including PCs, to cater to more youngsters.
Ms. Adamson, who established the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on the Scottish Games Ecosystem, commended YMCA Wishaw for their innovative approach. She highlighted the growing importance of the gaming sector, which surpasses the traditional entertainment industries in terms of revenue generation. Esports, also known as competitive gaming, has a widespread global audience, with Esports stars gaining celebrity status in certain regions.
The benefits of participating in the Esports Academy extend beyond gaming skills, encompassing social skills, self-confidence, and transferable skills that are highly sought after in future industries. Gaming technology is increasingly being utilised across various sectors such as education, healthcare, and even agriculture. The presence of an Esports Academy in Wishaw is seen as a significant asset for the local community, fostering a positive environment for children to thrive in. Efforts are underway to expand the project to offer more opportunities to young people in the area.
In summary, Clare Adamson’s visit to Wishaw YMCA shed light on the positive impact of the Esports Academy in nurturing the skills and talents of young gamers in the community. The conversation around the future expansion of the academy and the benefits it provides in terms of personal development and future employability is crucial in recognising the value of Esports in the modern age. Investing in such initiatives not only supports young people’s interests but also equips them with valuable skills for the evolving job market.
