Concerns remain over medication management at Ayrshire care home service

Concerns have been raised regarding the medication management at a care home service in Ayrshire. Fairknowe Care Home Service, located on Cargill Road in Maybole, underwent a follow-up inspection by the Care Inspectorate. The inspection focused on addressing previous requirements for improvement identified in July 2024 and assessing the service’s efforts to enhance outcomes for residents.

The Care Inspectorate noted positive aspects such as warm and caring relationships between staff and residents, as well as the introduction of a food focus group to involve residents in menu planning. However, the inspection highlighted ongoing concerns about the management of medication within the service.

Fairknowe House is authorised to provide care for up to 40 elderly individuals with physical or dementia-related needs, under the management of Mead Medical Services Limited. While the care home received a ‘good’ rating for two quality indicators during an inspection earlier this year, it was only deemed ‘adequate’ for three others.

Specifically, the inspection report highlighted the need for further improvement in medication management, citing issues with record-keeping and adherence to best practice guidelines. As a result, the care home has been granted an extension until 19 January 2025 to enhance medication management, ensuring residents’ safety and health requirements are effectively met.

The report emphasised the importance of accurate and detailed record-keeping in medication administration to prevent misunderstandings and potential negative impacts on residents’ health. The Care Inspectorate reiterated the requirement for improved medication management and set a new deadline for compliance.

In conclusion, the concerns raised during the inspection at Fairknowe Care Home Service underline the critical importance of robust medication management protocols in care settings to safeguard residents’ well-being and ensure quality care provision.
