Crowds turn out as Lanark lights up for Christmas and market returns to town

Crowds in Lanark were treated to a festive extravaganza as the town lit up for Christmas and the beloved Christmas market made its return. The annual Christmas lights switch-on event, hosted by South Lanarkshire Council, drew in hundreds of spectators who eagerly awaited Santa’s arrival to illuminate the town. From 2pm, live entertainment kept the crowds entertained until the magical moment at 5pm when Lanark came alive with sparkling lights along the streets and at St Nicholas’ Church.
Simultaneously, the popular Lanark Christmas Market kicked off in the High Street, boasting over 70 stalls offering an array of gifts, festive foods, and drinks for visitors to enjoy. Antonia Pompa, the BID Manager at Discover Lanark, expressed her delight at the bustling atmosphere, saying, “It looks really nice, the lights are all on and the tree looks spectacular. It was very successful and we had a very busy day.”
The market was a hive of activity, with shops and cafes also bustling as visitors explored the offerings. Musical entertainment from local groups and the SoundSational Choir and MacBusted added to the festive spirit, creating a joyous atmosphere for all to revel in. Alongside the music, families could partake in games and family fun activities to enhance the celebratory mood.
Looking ahead, the town of Lanark has more festive events lined up, including the Illuminated Lanimer Parade on November 22 and late-night shopping sessions on Fridays. The Lanark Christmas Pop-Up Market on December 7 will showcase local artisans and producers, providing another opportunity for unique gift shopping.
Moreover, Santa will make special appearances in Lanark on December 14 and 21 for Santa Saturdays at the Tolbooth, offering storytelling, crafts, photos, and a chance to meet the man in red himself. The festive season in Lanark promises more magic and merriment for residents and visitors alike.
