Dedicated group of volunteers help with Balmaha Tom Weir garden clean-up

A group of dedicated volunteers came together to assist with a clean-up at the Balmaha Tom Weir garden, as reported by the Daily Record. The enthusiastic group, consisting of over 20 volunteers, gathered to tidy up the garden area and planted 150 heathers. The initiative was part of the Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs ‘Make a Difference’ Day, where volunteers worked tirelessly under the blue skies and sunshine.

John Urquhart, the chair of the Friends group, expressed gratitude towards the volunteers for their hard work and also thanked the National Park Authority for providing tools and equipment. The Oak Tree Inn generously provided lunch for the volunteers, which was enjoyed by all. Surprisingly, very little litter was found in the area, making the litter-picking equipment unnecessary.

The Friends group successfully secured a Volunteering Matters Action Earth Grant, with funding from Naturescot, to support the planting of new plants in the garden. After the clean-up, some volunteers accompanied John on a guided walk along the West Highland shore-side path, enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

The Tom Weir’s Rest picnic site has been open for a decade now, and plans are in place to replace the deteriorating wooden interpretation panels. The Friends group is seeking funding for this project and welcomes donations towards the cause. The effort and dedication shown by the volunteers in preserving and enhancing the Tom Weir garden reflect a strong sense of community spirit and environmental stewardship. Their work not only contributes to the beautification of the area but also upholds the legacy of Tom Weir and promotes sustainable practices within the community.
