Deer ‘spooked by fireworks’ found with ‘catastrophic injuries’ next to Scots cliff

A deer with “catastrophic injuries” was discovered next to a cliff in Aberdeenshire, believed to have been spooked by fireworks. The animal was found with a badly fractured jaw and multiple leg fractures at the base of cliffs in Crovie on Sunday. Responding to the scene, New Arc Wildlife Rescue, a local charity, had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize the deer due to the severity of its injuries.

According to the charity staff, who spoke to witnesses reporting fireworks being set off, it is suspected that the deer was frightened by the sounds of fireworks, causing it to panic, flee, and fall over the cliff edge. An official from New Arc Wildlife commented, “With a badly fractured jaw and multiple leg fractures, it was clear the deer had fallen from the cliffs above. Sadly, due to the extent of the injuries, we had no choice but to end the deer’s suffering immediately.”

The charity emphasised the potential dangers of fireworks not only to wildlife but also to vulnerable members of society, pets, and livestock. They are now calling on the public to support campaigns addressing the unregulated use of fireworks and their impact on animals.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the detrimental effects that fireworks can have on wildlife and the importance of responsible usage. It highlights the need for greater awareness and consideration when engaging in activities that may cause distress or harm to animals in their natural habitats. The tragic outcome underscores the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect wildlife from such avoidable incidents in the future.
