Dentist explains how weight gain may be caused by common oral health issue


A dentist has highlighted an unexpected connection between weight gain and oral health, shedding light on the potential impact of common oral issues on overall well-being. Dr Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, points out that problems like gum disease and harmful bacteria in the mouth can extend beyond dental concerns, affecting gut health, metabolism, and food cravings. Poor oral hygiene is not only linked to dental issues but can also trigger a chain of health problems that influence the entire body, including metabolism and weight management.

One significant way in which oral health can affect weight gain is through gum disease’s impact on gut health. Gum disease, a chronic inflammatory condition caused by harmful bacteria, can lead to systemic inflammation when the bacteria enter the bloodstream. This inflammation can result in insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances, contributing to weight gain by disrupting the body’s glucose processing and promoting fat storage.

Moreover, the presence of harmful bacteria from gum disease can disturb the gut microbiome, crucial for digestion and immune function. Dr Bozic emphasises that the imbalance caused by oral bacteria can lead to digestive issues, inflammation in the gut, and increased cravings for high-calorie, sugary foods. This imbalance may also make it harder to feel satiated after meals, potentially leading to overeating and weight gain.

Furthermore, oral health plays a role in food choices that can impact weight management. Dental pain or sensitive gums may deter individuals from consuming fibrous foods like vegetables and whole grains, essential for weight control. Instead, people with poor oral health may opt for softer, processed foods that are easier to eat but often contain high levels of sugar and calories. Thus, maintaining good oral hygiene through practices like brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings can indirectly support weight management by promoting a healthier gut and reducing chronic inflammation.

Dr Bozic recommends incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, and omega-3-rich fish into the diet to help reduce inflammation in both the gums and gut. By prioritising oral health, individuals may not only safeguard their smiles but also aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Taking care of oral hygiene is not just about preserving a smile but could also assist in keeping excess weight at bay.
