Diamonds in the Community charity volunteers take part in fourth sponsored sleepout

Diamonds in the Community charity volunteers recently participated in their fourth sponsored sleepout event in Airdrie. The dedicated volunteers braved freezing temperatures as they slept on Graham Street in Airdrie town centre to raise awareness of homelessness. People of all ages came together to spend 12 hours outdoors in the chilly winter weather, with support from local businesses.
The annual winter sleepout not only raised awareness but also raised funds for the Monklands Baby and Family Aid project. This project collects and distributes essential items like clothes, nappies, furniture, and white goods to local families in need. The event, which first took place in 2021, has been a meaningful way to support the community and those experiencing homelessness.
During the sleepout, participants were provided with midnight mince and tatties by a local pub, The Staging Post, to keep warm. Costa Airdrie also opened early to serve hot drinks to the volunteers. Despite having some comforts like toilets and hot drinks, the experience aimed to be authentic to shed light on the challenges faced by those sleeping rough.
A representative from the charity expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the event and encouraged ongoing donations to support their cause. Homelessness is a year-round issue, and events like the sleepout help raise awareness of the difficulties faced by many individuals. The volunteers made it through the night safely and tired but fulfilled.
The charity emphasised the importance of bringing awareness to the struggles faced by homeless individuals, highlighting the harsh reality of being on the streets regardless of the season. The community’s support and participation in events like the sleepout help make a positive impact and provide much-needed support to those in need.
To contribute to the charity’s fundraising efforts, interested individuals can search for “DITC Sponsored Sleep Out 2024” to make a donation. Initiatives like this sleepout not only raise funds but also promote empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in society.
