Did you feel the ‘mini-earthquake’ recorded near Perthshire village?

Residents of Comrie, a quaint village in Perthshire, may have experienced a slight tremor on Sunday morning. A low-level earthquake with a magnitude of 0.9 on the Richter scale was recorded at 8.37 am, originating from farmland north of Lawers. The peaceful village was hardly stirred by the seismic event, which was detected by the British Geological Survey.

It remains a mystery what triggered the earthquake, as such occurrences are not uncommon in the UK. The largest earthquake ever documented in Scotland, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, took place near Loch Awe back in 1880. The British Geological Survey is equipped with a network of over 100 seismograph stations across the UK to monitor such geological activities. On average, between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected and located in the UK each year.

Despite the rarity of seismic events in the area, the villagers of Comrie remained unfazed by the minor earthquake. The scientific community continues to study these occurrences to better understand the geological dynamics at play in the region.
