Doctor issues warning over ‘most toxic item in home’ that you must ‘get rid of’

A naturopathic doctor has raised concerns about the presence of what he deems as the ‘most toxic item in your home’ and has urged people to get rid of it immediately. Dr Pedi Mirdamadi took to TikTok to reveal that the common plug-in air freshener could be causing allergies, itchy eyes, and worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma. According to Dr Mirdamadi, these air fresheners often contain harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds that can enter our bodies through inhalation. He emphasised that the air we breathe is a quick pathway for toxins to enter our system.

The doctor strongly advised individuals who use plug-in air fresheners, especially those experiencing allergy or asthma symptoms, to switch them off and dispose of them. Instead, Dr Mirdamadi encouraged the use of essential oil diffusers as a safer alternative for freshening the home environment. Acknowledging suggestions from his followers, he shared natural approaches like simmering orange peel, cloves, cinnamon, and cranberries, or lemons and thyme in water as healthier ways to improve indoor air quality.

Supporting Dr Mirdamadi’s stance, How Stuff Works highlighted the potential health risks associated with air fresheners, citing chemicals like formaldehyde, petrochemicals, and aerosol pollutants that can be detrimental with prolonged or high-level exposure. While the Environmental Protection Agency has not issued strict warnings against air fresheners, they recommend cautious usage and suggest natural alternatives like ventilation, baking soda, or lemon peels for odour control to mitigate potential health concerns.

In conclusion, Dr Mirdamadi’s warning sheds light on a common household item that may pose unseen risks to our health. It serves as a reminder to be mindful of the products we use daily and consider safer alternatives for a healthier living environment.
