Dog owners issued ‘toxic’ warning ahead of Storm Bert bringing ’40cm of snow’

Dog owners across the UK have been issued a ‘toxic’ warning ahead of Storm Bert bringing heavy snowfall this weekend. The Met Office has highlighted several weather warnings as Storm Bert is expected to cover the country with snow, with the most severe conditions forecasted for Saturday. Snow warnings are in place for Northern Ireland, Scotland, northern parts of England, and the Midlands. An amber warning has been issued for areas in Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Highland, Stirling, Perth and Kinross, as well as Angus, where snowfall could reach up to 40cm on higher ground. Lower-lying areas could see between 5cm to 10cm of snow on Saturday.

As the wintry conditions approach, dog owners have been advised to take a crucial step for their pets’ safety. TikTok user Alex (@nuggypup), who shares her life with her dog Nugget on the platform, emphasises the importance of wiping down dogs after walks in snowy conditions. She warns that the grit used on roads and pavements can be toxic and irritating to dogs’ paws. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has also highlighted the dangers of rock salt, commonly used during snowy weather, which can be harmful if pets lick it off their paws or fur.

The RSPCA recommends thoroughly wiping pets’ feet and fur after they have been outside to remove any potential toxins. If a pet shows signs of discomfort after potential exposure to rock salt, they advise using a mild, pet-safe shampoo and warm water to wash the affected areas and dry the pet’s fur completely with a towel. If there are concerns about a pet ingesting rock salt, the RSPCA stresses the importance of seeking immediate veterinary assessment.

With Storm Bert approaching and the potential for significant snowfall, it is crucial for dog owners to take precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of their furry companions.
