Double tragedy as student takes own life after brother stabbed to death by uncle

A tragic double loss has struck a family from Orkney as a university student took her own life, two years after her brother was stabbed to death by their uncle. Claire Fraser, a student at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, passed away on November 20. Police responded to a call at the university campus, where the 19-year-old was found deceased. Claire’s brother, William Fraser, was fatally stabbed 20 times by their uncle, Erlend Fraser, in 2022. Their mother, Fiona Fraser, revealed that Claire had been struggling with her mental health since William’s tragic murder and launched a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses.

Family friend Fiona Annal expressed the devastation of the Frasers, stating they were enduring another nightmare following Claire’s death. Erlend Fraser, who was charged with culpable homicide due to diminished responsibility, was sentenced to a high-security psychiatric hospital following the fatal attack on William. The police confirmed no suspicious circumstances surrounding Claire’s death and stated that a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
