Dougall Baillie Associates enhancing its talent pool with new intake of graduate apprentices


Dougall Baillie Associates is boosting its talent pool by welcoming a new group of graduate apprentices, as reported by Daily Record. The East Kilbride firm, Dougall Baillie Associates (DBA), is once again taking in young individuals who will be working towards a university degree over a four-year period, while gaining crucial professional experience at the same time. With a workforce of 41 employees, DBA is considered one of the largest independent engineering consultancy firms in Scotland.

The decision to opt for graduate apprenticeships over traditional graduate roles stems from the recognition of the benefits they bring, such as practical experience, work ethic, and a deep understanding of workplace dynamics. In addition, statistics show that apprentice-trained staff are more likely to stay with the company for at least five years compared to those entering through traditional routes.

Scott Macphail, the director of civil engineering at DBA, expressed delight in welcoming two new apprentices, Kieran Ross, 18, and Jenny O’Brien, 19. Kieran, from East Kilbride, is pursuing civil engineering, while Jenny, from Blantyre, is focusing on structural engineering. Scott highlighted the advantages of the apprenticeship programme, mentioning that apprentices like Kieran and Jenny will not only gain hands-on experience but also earn a salary without incurring student debt.

Both Kieran and Jenny had to meet the academic requirements equivalent to a university course and will be studying at Strathclyde University, known for its reputable Engineering School. Scott praised Strathclyde for its well-structured course delivery, which includes digital learning platforms offering valuable resources for students.

The apprenticeship programme not only benefits the apprentices but also aids in the retention of staff and the development of a strong team dynamic from the outset. Scott firmly believes that given the choice between a recent graduate and a graduate apprentice, he would choose the latter every time.
