Drug addict jailed for stealing equipment worth more than £100,000

A drug addict has been sentenced to two years in jail for stealing equipment worth over £100,000 from a contracting business. Ian Brown targeted the same depot three times within a two-week period, making off with two trailers and plant machinery. The 38-year-old father admitted to the thefts at Enerveo in Newhouse between December 6 and 21 last year, citing a need to settle a drug debt amounting to thousands of pounds as his motivation for the crimes.

Despite extensive police investigations, none of the stolen property was recovered. Aga Mathieson, the prosecutor, informed Hamilton Sheriff Court that Brown was identified through DNA and fingerprints, but he remained silent when confronted with the charges. In addition to the theft from Enerveo, Brown also confessed to stealing fuel worth £1300 from a reservoir near Strathaven and taking a vehicle along with plant equipment from a windfarm at Coalburn.

During the court proceedings, Brown’s defence lawyer, Stephen MacBride, revealed that his client’s life had spiraled into chaos due to a cocaine addiction leading up to the offences. Describing Brown’s actions as a result of his desperation to repay his substantial drug debt, MacBride emphasised the poor decision-making influenced by the addiction. Recognising Brown’s history of previous convictions, Sheriff Michael Higgins concluded that custody was the only viable sentencing option, highlighting the serious financial losses incurred by multiple parties due to Brown’s dishonest conduct.
