Dumfries and Galloway’s Young Talent Shines at DG Youth Awards

The talents and achievements of young people in Dumfries and Galloway were celebrated at the annual DG Youth Awards at Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries. The event kicked off with a lively cheerleading performance by Envy Cheerleading from Stranraer, followed by opening remarks from Ailsa McDairmant, the chairperson of Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council. Iain Corbett, the participation, policy, and engagement advisor at the University of Strathclyde, delivered a keynote speech emphasising the importance of youth work in building resilience and confidence in young individuals, while also addressing the challenges they face in today’s world.

The audience was then inspired by the stories of 24 young finalists who were shortlisted from over 200 nominations. Winners were announced across various categories:

– Sport: Josh Parker, who represented Scotland in The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships.
– Equality: Listen2Us Research Group, advocating for change within the care experienced community.
– Young Enterprise and Business: Newton Stewart Initiative trainee youth workers, providing opportunities for community engagement.
– Rising Star Award: Emma Halliday, a dedicated youth leader in Stranraer.
– Culture, Arts, and Entertainment: Nadine McDonald, a talented individual in theatre and arts.
– Young Volunteer: Lucas Moorhouse, showing dedication and leadership in volunteering.
– Unsung Hero: Riley True, a committed youth council member for the Lochar Ward.
– Group of the Year: Through Young Eyes Steering Group, raising awareness of youth poverty in the region.
– Youth Worker of the Year (paid): Carla Grant, offering support and guidance to young individuals.
– Youth Worker of the Year (volunteer): Nicola Todd, a dedicated volunteer at Youth Enquiry Service.

The prestigious Young Person of the Year 2024 award went to Josh Parker, the Sports Award winner. Councillor Maureen Johnstone of Dumfries and Galloway Council praised the inspirational stories of the winners, highlighting the impact of youth work in the community. Ailsa McDairmant, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council, expressed gratitude to funders for making the event possible and congratulated all participants for their positivity and inspiration.
