Dumfries ‘Lights of Hope’ switched on with Christmas countdown

The town of Dumfries was filled with festive joy as the ‘Lights of Hope’ were switched on, marking the start of the Christmas countdown. Organised by Dumfries Partnership Action Group, the event drew in massive crowds who enjoyed a day of entertainment and activities. Local talent from Dumfriesshire showcased their skills during the Christmas lights countdown and parade, creating a family-focused event that catered to all ages.

The highlight of the evening was the official switch-on of the Christmas lights by Lucy Galligan, the reigning Queen of the South, accompanied by real reindeer from the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd pulling Santa’s sleigh. School choirs, including Troqueer Primary, added to the festive atmosphere with their performances at the Loreburne Centre. Other attractions included the River of Life Youth, Dalscone Donkeys, Queen of the South FC, Solway Sharks, Nith Inshore Rescue, and even illuminated tractors on Queensberry Street.

Various entertainment acts such as Daffy Dill, Jordan Patterson Balloons, Andy Jester on stilts, and The Street Pastors kept the crowds entertained throughout the day. The festivities at the Planestanes featured performances by Alice Faye, the Dumfries Town Band, the Theatre Royal panto cast, DJ Connor Nelson, Next Level School of Dance, and Instep Dance group, with Lee Medd from Alive 107.3fm as the compère.

In addition to the town centre celebrations, hundreds of white ‘Lights of Hope’ were lit along the Whitesands, around the river, and on some of the bridges. These lights will remain illuminated during December, January, and February, serving as a symbol of hope and brightness during the dark winter months. Sponsored by Mark Jardine, founder of the People’s Project, the Lights of Hope aim to uplift spirits and bring a sense of positivity to the community.

The organisers of Dumfries Partnership Action Group extended their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the Christmas switch-on event. DPAG chairman, Robin Wishart, acknowledged the collaborative efforts of partners, businesses, and the community in making the festive season special for the town.
