Dumfriesshire’s John Thomson leaves a lasting legacy

Dumfriesshire Mourns the Loss of John Thomson, an Auctioneer and Historian of Distinction
Dumfriesshire is grieving the loss of John Thomson, a prominent auctioneer, author, and historian, who passed away peacefully at his home in Annan at the age of 100. John Alexander Thomson, born in October 1924 in Annan, was the youngest of three children. His father, Matthew John Thomson, was a well-known livestock auctioneer in the region, and John was raised in the auctioneering business from a young age.
Educated at prestigious institutions such as Annan Academy, Dalhousie Castle School, and Fettes College in Edinburgh, John served in the army during the war and later joined his father in the family auctioneering businesses in Dumfries and Annan. His contributions led to the amalgamation of several auction companies, forming Thomson, Roddick & Laurie Ltd, which became instrumental in the livestock industry in the region.
John had a deep affection for Cheviot sheep and played a significant role in promoting the Cheviot Mule breeding sheep, a venture that was initially met with skepticism but proved to be successful. His passion for history led him to write numerous books on various subjects, including the history of livestock marketing and the development of fairs and markets in Scotland and Northern England.
Throughout his life, John remained actively involved in politics, serving as the national chairman of the Scottish Young Conservatives at one point. His dedication to farming, livestock markets, and historical research earned him accolades, including the prestigious Farmers Guardian Auctioneers’ Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 94.
John’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements to his family, with whom he shared a close bond. He will be dearly missed by his four children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, who considered him a pillar of support and guidance.
In honour of John Thomson’s memory, donations to the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RSABI) can be made in his name. The funeral service will be held privately as per his wishes.
John Thomson’s remarkable contributions to Dumfriesshire will be remembered for generations to come, as his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.
