The emotional moment of watching their homes being demolished 13 months after the fire was described as “bittersweet” by the victims. The residents had lived in the street for over 40 years and had to cope with the loss caused by the accidental fire that escalated into a devastating inferno destroying multiple properties.
Donna Buchanan, representing the homeowners, shared that it had been a very emotional period for the residents. She expressed gratitude towards Central Demolition for their care and compassion during the demolition process. The demolition company played a significant role in supporting the families and ensuring the process was carried out with sensitivity.
Following their plea to South Lanarkshire Council for the demolition of their homes, plans have now been approved for the reconstruction of the properties in Whitelee. The new designs include two central 1.5-storey homes and three two-storey properties at either end, with hopes that the families could potentially return home by Christmas next year.
Donna further thanked the council for their timely planning approval and appreciated the support received from the local community and the people of East Kilbride during their time of need. The families are looking forward to the possibility of rebuilding their lives in Whitelee and moving forward from the tragic event.
