East Kilbride MP and MSP give their reaction to Chancellor’s blockbuster Budget

East Kilbride politicians have shared their reactions to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ recent Budget announcement. The Chancellor disclosed tax increases amounting to £40 billion to support the NHS and various public services. Additionally, companies will face a 15 per cent National Insurance levy on salaries exceeding £5,000 from April, generating an extra £25 billion annually. The Budget also includes a supplementary £3.4 billion allocation for the Scottish Government.

MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, Joani Reid, expressed her satisfaction with the new budget, describing it as a crucial step towards establishing a secure economic future for the region. She highlighted Labour’s dedication to aiding working families, small businesses, and essential public services in Scotland. Reid praised key provisions such as the rise in the National Living Wage to £12.21 per hour and the freeze on fuel duty. The increase in carers’ earnings threshold and substantial funding for Scotland were also commended.

While acknowledging the positive impact of these measures, Reid emphasised the ongoing need for reconstruction and reinforcement. On the other hand, East Kilbride SNP MSP, Collette Stevenson, criticized Labour’s decision to maintain certain Tory policies such as the bedroom tax and the two-child cap. Stevenson lamented the absence of compensation for WASPI women affected by State Pension age inequality. Despite some reservations, she acknowledged the Budget’s steps in the right direction but stressed the importance of addressing the cost-of-living crisis and advocating for sustained investment in public services and infrastructure.
