Eating chocolate every day ‘lowers blood pressure’ but don’t do it, experts warn

A recent study suggests that consuming chocolate daily may be more effective at reducing blood pressure than prescription medication, but experts are warning against indulging in large quantities of chocolate due to its high sugar content. The study, led by Dr Ana Rodriguez Mateo, a Lecturer in Nutrition at King’s College London, found that a daily intake of cocoa flavanols could lead to a significant decrease in blood pressure readings.
The research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, involved 45 healthy German men and compared the effects of high and low doses of cocoa flavanols on blood pressure. Participants who consumed high doses of certain flavanols experienced an average six-point drop in blood pressure. Dr Rodriguez Mateo emphasised the potential benefits of flavanols in improving vascular function, even in healthy individuals.
While the study points to the health benefits of cocoa flavanols, experts caution against excessive consumption of chocolate to obtain these benefits, as the accompanying fat and sugar content could counteract the positive effects. A cocoa flavanol supplement is suggested as a more controlled alternative to achieve the desired health outcomes without the drawbacks of consuming large amounts of chocolate.
Dr Miriam Ferrer, a spokeswoman for Cambridge Nutraceuticals, highlighted the benefits of cocoa flavanol supplements in maintaining blood vessel elasticity and reducing blood pressure. The study’s findings support existing research on the positive effects of flavanols in cardiovascular health maintenance.
High blood pressure is a common condition that can lead to serious health risks such as heart attacks, stroke, and dementia. While medication is commonly prescribed to manage high blood pressure, alternative approaches like dietary interventions are being explored. Updated blood pressure guidelines are expected to be released in the New Year, with a focus on earlier detection and intervention to prevent related health complications.
It is crucial for individuals to prioritise a healthy diet and regular exercise to protect against high blood pressure. The potential benefits of cocoa flavanols in managing blood pressure underscore the importance of further research in this area to develop effective strategies for cardiovascular health.
In summary, the study on the effects of cocoa flavanols on blood pressure offers promising insights into the potential of dietary interventions in promoting heart health. While chocolate lovers may rejoice at the idea of chocolate’s health benefits, moderation and informed choices are key to reaping the rewards without compromising overall well-being. As researchers and healthcare professionals continue to explore innovative approaches to managing high blood pressure, incorporating flavanol-rich foods or supplements into a balanced diet could provide a natural and effective means of supporting cardiovascular health.
