Edinburgh celebrates 900th anniversary with spectacular Castle of Light show

Edinburgh is celebrating its 900th anniversary with a spectacular Castle of Light show at Edinburgh Castle. The annual interactive light trail, now in its fifth year, has been given a special touch this year to commemorate the milestone. The festivities began with pupils from Royal Mile Primary School joining Rex the lion to switch on the lights for the event’s seven-week run. The Castle of Light features immersive light and sound displays that bring to life 900 years of history, enchanting visitors with mythical creatures, long-lost tales, and a journey through Scotland’s famous figures.
This year, the event highlights the stories of Edinburgh’s trailblazing women, inspired by Edinburgh author Sara Sheridan’s book ‘Where are the Women?’. The light displays on the Lava Wall showcase the stories of remarkable women such as Mary Sommerville, Isabella Bird, and Sophia Jex-Blake, shedding light on their contributions throughout history. Emma Bowie, regional visitor & community manager at Edinburgh Castle, expressed that the Castle of Light has become a significant part of Edinburgh’s winter calendar, especially during this special year of celebration.
The event will run for seven weeks, with special access nights and ticketed entry slots available for visitors to enjoy the festive displays until January 4, 2025. Families, friends, and history enthusiasts are invited to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Edinburgh while making unforgettable memories at the Castle of Light. Edinburgh’s Castle of Light is not only a cultural celebration but also a testament to the city’s vibrant history and the significant contributions of its women. As the dazzling displays illuminate the castle grounds, visitors are transported through time, experiencing the magic of Scotland’s past. This year’s event is a fitting tribute to Edinburgh’s 900th anniversary, bringing people together to appreciate the city’s legacy and create lasting memories during the festive season.
