Falkirk roads need more money to be kept in decent condition


Falkirk Council is pushing for increased funding to maintain the roads in the area after a recent survey identified roads as the most valued service by the public. According to a report presented to Falkirk Council’s Scrutiny Committee, it will require nearly £8 million annually to upkeep the 325 km of roads in the district. This amount is more than double the expected £3.5 million annual budget allocation for road maintenance in the future.

Despite previous additional funding resulting in the roads reaching their best condition score in 17 years, ongoing investment of £7.7 million per year is deemed necessary to merely sustain the current state. Without this increased funding, the service can only hope to “manage decline.” The council emphasised that an annual capital investment of £7.7 million is crucial to prevent the network from deteriorating further.

Malcolm Binnie, Director of Place at Falkirk Council, highlighted the significance of this information for councillors as they prepare to set the budget in February. With a projected funding shortfall of £56 million over the next five years, Binnie urged roads to be prioritised in budget decisions due to its essential role. Roads manager David Maley underscored the importance of timely repairs not only for cost-effectiveness but also to prevent compensation payouts for damages caused by road defects.

A recent council tax survey involving over 1300 responses revealed that road maintenance was the most highly regarded service, with concerns about the condition of roads and pavements frequently raised.
