Festive drink and drug-driving crackdown launched in West Dunbartonshire after more drivers than ever caught last year

A crackdown on festive drink and drug-driving has been launched in West Dunbartonshire following an increase in the number of drivers caught under the influence last year. In 2023, police in Argyll and West Dunbartonshire caught 41 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This year, the Scottish Government and Police Scotland have teamed up to tackle this issue during the festive season.

The new campaign comes after a record number of drivers were caught drink or drug-driving in 2023. Between December 1 and January 2, 41 offences were recorded in Argyll and West Dunbartonshire. Police Scotland is now cracking down on offenders, warning that driving under the influence endangers not only the driver but also other road users.

With roadside drug testing becoming more common using simple swabs, police officers are able to detect drug-drivers more easily. Nearly 50% of tests have shown positive results for drugs. According to data from 2022, drink-driving alone has led to 30 deaths and 280 injuries. The authorities are highlighting the severe consequences of drink and drug-driving, emphasizing the potential risks and penalties involved.

Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, Angela Constance, alongside Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, Police Scotland’s Head of Road Policing, stressed the devastating impact of driving under the influence. Constance highlighted the destruction caused by driving with alcohol or drugs in one’s system, not just for victims but also for the offenders themselves. Penalties for those caught driving with alcohol or drugs in their system can include a driving ban, fines, penalty points, and even imprisonment.

To ensure road safety during the festive season, Police Scotland is advising people to plan their transport before heading out. Chief Superintendent Sloan reiterated the importance of targeting drivers who choose to drink or take drugs, as these substances impair driving abilities. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the long-lasting effects of alcohol and drugs, reminding people that even one drink can put them over the legal limit.

The repercussions of driving under the influence can be severe, including fines, driving bans, and even imprisonment. The message from authorities is clear: it’s not worth risking lives by driving impaired. By encouraging responsible behaviour and emphasising the potential consequences, the campaign aims to make roads safer during the holidays. The new drink and drug-driving advertising campaign will run across various platforms to drive home the message about the dangers of driving under the influence.

In summary, the festive season is a time for celebration, but it’s crucial to prioritise road safety. The crackdown on drink and drug-driving in West Dunbartonshire serves as a reminder of the potential risks and consequences of driving under the influence. By raising awareness and enforcing strict penalties, authorities aim to protect both drivers and other road users during this period of increased festivities. Stay safe on the roads this holiday season and plan your journeys responsibly.
