Former Balloch Library to be sold – despite last ditch SNP move to block sale

Former Balloch Library Set to Be Sold Despite SNP Attempt to Halt Sale
The former Balloch Library building on Carrochan Road is slated to be sold, following a recent move to block its disposal. Labour councillors on WDC’s infrastructure, regeneration and economic development (IRED) committee have given the green light to sell the facility to McVey and Burns Property Investment Limited for a sum of £150,000 plus VAT. Among the five offers received, ranging from £70,000 to £150,000, the proposal from McVey and Burns Property Investment Limited was deemed the most attractive. If approved, the firm intends to convert the site into a residential development.
Last year, the local authority proceeded with plans to relocate the library within the Balloch School Campus, amid strong opposition from parents and residents. Despite protests, including a petition with over 2,000 signatures and a legal challenge, WDC leader Martin Rooney defended the relocation as necessary to preserve jobs and potentially save around £50,000 annually for WDC.
Recently, SNP member Chris Pollock made a last-minute effort to prevent the sale and explore options for community ownership. However, no community groups submitted bids for the building. Labour councillor Hazel Sorrell stated that community groups in the Lomond Ward lacked the resources to acquire the building. In response to the SNP’s motion to block the sale, Labour’s David McBride noted the council’s financial constraints and emphasised the need to prioritise essential services.
Ultimately, the SNP amendment was defeated by a vote of six to four. The sale is expected to proceed, with plans for residential redevelopment on the horizon.
In conclusion, the decision to sell the former Balloch Library despite community opposition underscores the challenges faced by local authorities in balancing financial constraints and community needs. The outcome sheds light on the complexities of repurposing public spaces and the importance of engaging with stakeholders to ensure decisions align with the best interests of the community.
